The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has listed summer opportunities for undergraduate biomedical research.
Children's Hospital Colorado
The Department of Pediatrics offers summer research opportunities for rising high school seniors, college students and first-year medical students. Students will work in the lab with members of the Department of Pediatrics faculty at Children's Hospital Colorado/University of Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus. The summer program will introduce students to research opportunities related to child health.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
The Pediatric Oncology Education program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is funded by the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute. The POE program offers a unique opportunity for students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, or public health to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. The POE program provides a short-term training experience (internship) in either laboratory research or clinical research.
The Global Health Internship Program at Seattle
The Global Health Internship Program at Seattle BioMed provides an opportunity to spend the summer in an environment devoted exclusively to infectious disease research. Each summer, Seattle BioMed will place three highly qualified undergraduate interns at the Institute.
University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center
University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center has a summer undergraduate research program for students interested in cardiovascular research. The program is for students interested in pursuing biomedical research.
The Duke University Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) provides hands-on experience in graduate-level biomedical research. The program is designed for students who are seriously considering joining a Ph.D. Graduate Program after their undergraduate degree. The program accepts international students.
Biomedical Sciences at U Penn
The U of Pennsylvania has undergraduate positions in basic laboratory research related to gene therapy of cystic fibrosis, other genetic diseases, cancer and vaccines.
University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine
The University of Iowa SUMR Program offers an intensive experience for undergraduates interested in combined MD/PhD training for a career as a physician-scientist. The program provides students with experience in research laboratories and exposure to clinical medicine and medically-relevant research. The 8-week SUMR program features research conducted in the laboratory of a faculty member in the biomedical sciences, shadowing of physician-scientists in a clinical setting, Emergency Room shadowing, weekly seminars presenting patient-based discussions emphasizing the intersection of science and medicine, career development seminars, and clinical case-based learning sessions.
Indiana University School of Medicine
The Pediatric Research at Indiana University School of Medicine
The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research offers research opportunities for undergraduates. .
Public Health: U of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha)
The summer undergraduate research program (SURP) has approximately 100 positions available. The program is a research experience, primarily in a laboratory setting. There are limited clinical experiences available in the Internal Medicine department and other types of research in the College of Public Health in health care ethics and medical humanities, health promotion, epidemiology, rural health and environmental health sciences. International students who are currently on an F1 visa in the United States can apply to the program.
Global Health Center at Washington University
There are two summer research programs offered, the Public Health Advanced Summer Education (PHASE) program and the Summer Program for Research in Global Health (SPRINGH), with support from the Departments of Medicine, Molecular Microbiology, and Pathology and Immunology.
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has an extensive Summer Research Fellows Program. Programs include research in cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, molecular genetics and research at the Children’s Foundation.
Recommended by an Alum:
U of Pittsburgh
Malcom Meyn, a Macalester alum, works in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He contacted a Macalester faculty member about a summer research program at Pitt. Malcolm states, " I wanted to let you know about a summer research program that Pitt runs for undergraduates. This program is well run and provides a strong summer opportunity for students interested in biomedical research. I have mentored a few of these students and all had positive things to say about the experience."
The Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation has a Laboratory Biomedical Services internship for the summer of 2015. Interns work with a research scientist and team on an independent project that is part of a larger research endeavor. More information will be available in late December.
- For a list of summer research opportunities for undergraduates interested in neuroscience go to funfaculty.org/drupal/undergrad_internships_neuroscience.
- Another summer research opportunity in neuroscience is located at Washington University. Cognitive, Computational and Systems Neuroscience (CCSN) is an exciting and fast-growing interdisciplinary field. It draws on psychology, neurobiology, and biomedical engineering.
