what can you do?

HOURCAR
hourcar application

The HOURCAR program currently serves Macalester College and the Mac-Groveland community with two Toyota Priuses, gas-electric hybrids that regularly garners over 47 miles to the gallon and produces relatively few emissions.  The Priuses are located in the parking lot on Grand Avenue across from Patagonia and near the George Draper Dayton dorm.   Members also have access to all automobiles in the 16-car fleet.  Using the car is simple: drivers reserve a time online, use the HOURCAR, and then return it to the reserved parking space.  Drivers pay for time and mileage, but operational costs such as the cost of gas, insurance ($1 million with a $500 deductible), and parking are all included.

Opportunities for Macalester Departments
Whether driving to a meeting or taking a class trip, HOURCAR is available for use by Macalester departments.  Any department can register and there is no membership fee.  The department signs up individual drivers for a $25-per-driver application fee and are charged based on time and mileage.

Opportunities for Individual Students & Staff
Car-sharing is an ideal option for students without cars who occasionally travel to places which are not accessible by public transit and as an alternative to borrowing another student’s car.  The HOURCAR is perfect for staff members who sometimes need transportation while at work or, for multi-driver households, as an alternative to buying a second car.  Recently, the age requirement for membership dropped from 21- to 18-years of age, so it now includes most students at Macalester.  Students and staff can choose from a variety of plans to meet their needs, and register for membership online.  See the HOURCAR website (www.hourcar.org) for more information and driver qualifications. International students are eligible to apply.
