Information Technology Services

What is ITS doing toward making Macalester a greener campus?  More than you might think - and they have been doing it for years.  Check out the ITS sustainability web site for information on how you can reduce your paper and energy usage (did you know that you can read a document online and take notes electronically as well?), plus links to statistics on overall college resource consumption.

Bon Appétit

How are your food choices affecting climate change?  What does your morning cup of coffee have to do with tropical songbirds?  Bon Appétit’s website is full of information on sustainable eating, food safety, and strategies for eating a low-carbon diet.  The website provides an overview of different issues pertaining to the food we eat including the pros and cons of buying different types of foods.  The website also decodes the food labeling system (what, for example, is the difference between “Organic” and “100% Organic?”) and provides an overview on the latest nutritional questions about growth hormones, antibiotics, and more.  The website also features a “What You Can Do” section and information about the food Bon Appétit provides for Macalester College.

Procurement

The Procurement Office is pioneering an alternative model to traditional purchasing that takes into account not only the price and quality of the purchased goods, but also the social and environmental impact of their production and shipment.  By facilitating sustainable practices on campus through purchasing sustainable goods, the Macalester community can reduce its own negative social and environmental impact while promoting sustainable alternatives to exploitative business practices. Check out the sustainability procurement website to see a list of sustainable products that Macalester already purchases and the College’s purchasing policies.

Employment Services

Employment Services has embraced Macalester College’s sustainability goals and has implemented a number of programs to help the College achieve its objectives.  Check out the Employment Services website to learn more about even a “non-environmental” department is saving money and time by making behavioral changes that reduce the department’s use of energy, water, and paper.
