Global problem: Sustainability efforts are often disaggregated; it can be difficult to recognize the intersections between environmental, social, and economic efforts and how they can complement each other. Issues with energy use and emissions often overlap with opportunities to cut costs, but collaboration is required to recognized these integrative opportunities.
Local solution: Macalester’s Sustainability Student Network unites sustainability workers from departments across campus to creatively discuss issues and ideas, problem-solve, share resources, and plan campus events related to sustainability.
How we’re doing: In the 2013-2014 school year, the Sustainability Office is expanding the Student Network by assigning representatives to all college departments, even those without a formal sustainability worker.
