Q How do I access my voice mailbox from off campus?
A Dial 696-6666 press *, then your voice mailbox number (same as your extension, unless you share your phone) input your passcode.

Q How do I change my voice mail greeting?
A Access your voice mailbox, press 4 (Personal Options), then 3 (Greetings) and follow the prompts.

Q How can I find someone’s phone number?
A The on-line directory on the Macalester home page

during business hours, the campus switchboard, x6000
-or-
our 24 x 7 automated directory, x6777 (only transfers you, doesn’t give the phone number).

Q Why can't I find a student's phone number, and I'm positive the student is here?
A The student may have requested that his/her number not be released. To confirm, call the switchboard at x6000.

Q Why is my call to area code 612, 763, or 952 not going thru?
A Those area codes are in our local area. Dial 9 + area code + number.

Q Why is my call to area code 507 or 320 not going thru?
A Those area codes have numbers in our local area; therefore you don't need to dial a 1 before the number. Dial 9 + area code + number.

Q Why is my message light flashing,and I have no messages?
A If you share your phone, your roommate or officemate may have messages. If not, it may just be slow in deactivating. If it does not stop flashing in a few minutes, call x6566 and request that your message notification be turned off.

Q I forgot to exit voice mail by pressing the * key, and now I can't access my voice mailbox?
A Wait a few minutes and you should be able to access.

Q Can I retrieve a voice mail message that I just deleted?
A No

Q Can I make long distance or calling card calls from the hall/security phones?
A Yes; by using a calling card.; don’t forget to dial a 9 first.

Q Where is the Information Technology Services (ITS) Help Desk?
A Humanities Room 314, Extension 6525

A Dial 9 + 011 + country code + city code (if applicable + number www.countrycallingcodes.com is a great resource for country and city codes

Q How do I reach directory assistance?
A Dial 9 + 411

Q I’m unable to fax or make a long distance call, why?
A The fax machine or telephone you are using may require an authorization code. Authorization codes are assigned to departments for security purposes. If you were not given a code, check with your department coordinator. Please call Telecommunications, x6566, for further assistance.

Q How do I transfer a call?
A press transfer, dial the on campus 4 digit extension, press transfer

Q How do I make a conference call?
A call the first party. or receive a call, press conference, dial the next party (on or off campus)
press conference, continue until all parties are on (can have 6 people including yourself)
