A Gay Fantasia on National Themes Part I: Millennium Approaches -- one of the top ten important plays of the 20th century will be presented this fall. A fantasia of images, AIDS, Reaganomics, and identity consume life in New York City. Forces beyond our control are troubled with the state of the planet. Revealed are the human needs of intimacy, commitment, and self revelation.

Lysistrata

by Aristophanes
Guest Directed by Cheryl Moore Brinkley
November 9, 10, 15-17 at 7:30 p.m.
November 11 at 2 p.m.

In this ancient (but timeless!) Greek comedy, Aristophanes proffered his unique solution to the ancient (and timeless!) problem of the insanity of war. Our heroine, Lysistrata, inspired by the goddess, Athena, rallies the women to levy sanctions on... to boycott... to withhold... well, SEX! in hopes of "disarming" their warrior husbands. Comic license is granted for outrageous antics on the Macalester main stage in the search for... well, PEACE, of course.

Fall Dance Concert

December 7-8 at 7:30
December 9 at 2:00

Guest artist Joe Chvala joins the Macalester faculty and select students in creating dance for this annual concert. Choreography is designed around the department's 2007-2008 theme of Gods and Monsters.

The Threepenny Opera

Music by Kurt Weill
Book by BertoltBrecht
Guest Directed by Gary Briggle
February 29, March 1, 6-8 at 7:30 p.m.
March 2 at 2 p.m.

"Oh the shark has pretty teeth, dear . . ." so watch out! Mac the Knife is back in town! Out of the gutters, jails and brothels of London, this Brecht/Weill masterpiece tells the tale of the murderous Macheath, uncrowned King of Criminals, as he stalks money, power and women with a violent passion. Filled with Brecht's savage comedy and Weill's ravishing music, this show satirizes a decadent Weimar culture not unlike...our own?! Don't miss it!

Spring Dance Concert

April 4, 5 at 7:30
April 6 at 2:00

A melange of student choreography bursts onto the stage for these three performances that are produced, under faculty guidance, by the students.

The Witness Project: 3 Plays About Power and the State

"THE WITNESS PROJECT: 3 PLAYS ABOUT POWER AND THE STATE" offers three short, vivid plays by 3 major contemporary playwrights: *Press Conference,* by Harold Pinter (2002), is a five-minute news conference given by a former head of the Secret Police turned Minister of Culture, a role originally performed by Pinter himself; *The Conduct of Life* (1985) is the Cuban-American playwright Maria Irene Fornes's treatment of the home life of a torturer and his wife, set in an unnamed Latin American country; *Far Away* by Caryl Churchill (2000) is an eerie dystopic vision about the excesses of the State and their effects on the "normal lives" of three people.

April 25-26, May 1-3 at 7:30 pm
April 27 @ 2:00 pm. For tickets call 651-696-6359.
