Catalog Includes
What is a catalog include? A special line of code that displays copy from the Macalester College Catalog within your own department's web site.
Why is it used? Instead of linking to the appropriate page on the Catalog web site, you can use a catalog include to incorporate the program description or course listing data for your department within your web site, making it easier for visitors to your web site to find this important information. Another plus is the navigation, colors and layout of your department web site stays intact.
How can I add a catalog include? Create a new web page to hold the catalog include data. (Or, add the catalog include on an existing page.) Using a code-capable editor such as Dreamweaver or a text editor, add the desired catalog include directive on a new line. See below for the correct format for your department or program.
How do I see the results? Save the web page, and then view the page in your web browser. If you see an error message, contact Web Services for help.
I use Contribute. Can I add a catalog include? You can't add the code in Contribute, but we can take care of this step for you. Please contact Web Services for help.
How do I determine the correct format for the include directive? Use the following basic format for the include directive, substituting the appropriate code from the table below where you see the letters zzz.
format for program description
<!--#include virtual="/academic/catalog/program/includes/zzz_m.html" -->
format for course listings
<!--#include virtual="/academic/catalog/program/includes/zzz_c.html" -->
