Directory/Folder Names and Filenames
Directory/folder names and filenames on the web server should not have spaces. Alphanumeric characters, the underscore, the dash, and the period are acceptable. Any other punctuation is not recommended. (Note: As of Aug. 5, 2005, it is no longer necessary to avoid the user of upper case letters for personal web pages stored in user home directories on the Admin and Academic servers.)
We Suggest
all lowercase
no spaces
no punctuation
short folder names and filenames
Examples
\web\contact.html
\library\resources.html
\mediaservices\services.html
.html or .htm?
We suggest saving the web pages on your site using the .html extension. You may use .htm for saving your web pages but then stick with this extension. Being consistent is important.
Naming Your Home Page
In order for the web server to automatically serve your home page, it must be called index.html or index.htm. Subsequent pages can be added and linked from the home page.
