Spotlight
Theresa Song and the Bigelow dorms

By JAMES HAMILTON
Features Editor

For the second edition of The Mac Weekly's Spotlight feature, I sat down with Theresa Song '03 in the Bigelow Formal Lounge. An environmental studies and geography major, Theresa spent the last semester in Ecuador and is currently spending this semester rocking out as a DJ for WMCN.

Let's cover some of the standard questions first—like why does Bigelow smell so bad? Or how was your study abroad experience?

I went to Ecuador with the HECUA program. It was a great experience and program. My host family was awesome. They let me have my own space which was cool. I had to buy by host siblings' friendship with chocolate and CDs.

[I've been in the bathrooms in Bigelow before. They are hooked up: spacious dimensions, huge shower stalls, and heated floors. So what's the deal with the stank?]

Do you have plans for after college?

I want to do Teach for America and teach science to middle school students in New Mexico. I've never even been west of the Twin Cities before, but I want to see a new geographical region. I like the hot and dry climate.

[Bigelow even has sinks in the bedrooms.]

Is it hot and dry in Atlanta? What was it like growing up there?

If you don't have a car in Atlanta, there's nothing to do. You have to be 21 and have a car to have fun in Atlanta.

It would be fun to own a hang—out place for kids of all—ages in Atlanta. Kids could come and chill and listen to good music.

With all of those kids, the place might end up smelling like Bigelow.]

I think it would be fun to introduce a Waffle House or a Chick– Fil–A restaurant to the Midwest. They have those all over the South.

[I ate at a Waffle House one time. I had something called grits. I swear I almost puked].

Only in the South, the owner of the Chick– Fil–A restaurants is a Christian and he closes all of the restaurants on Sunday. It's the one day you really crave Chick– Fil–A.

[I crave alcohol on Sunday in Minnesota.]

Theresa and I started talking about causing trouble on–campus.

I "borrowed" CDs from WMCN—but I always returned them.

This semester, Theresa hosts a radio show on WMCN with Emily Reynolds '03 from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday titled "The Return of Shake Your Butt—But Not Too Hard." Although the show is broadcast from the basement of Bigelow, it does not stink. Rather, I highly recommend tuning in.

We had a Valentine's Day special that featured love songs from all different periods in a romantic relationship: the crush, the break-up, becoming a confident single person. It's a fun time.

What else do you keep yourself busy with?

I play Ultimate Frisbee. I work in the Environmental Studies department doing data entry. I can type 82 words per minute with three mistakes and 79 words with 100 percent accuracy.

I have no idea what this means but Theresa assures me that this is faster than I can type.

Are you going to be around this summer?

If I get the position with Teach for America, I will probably head off to the Southwest. Otherwise, I might volunteer at a youth camp—Camp Sunrise.

?Awww. More stinky kids.

Theresa has an infectious giggle and didn't seem to mind the smell in Bigelow.
