Mondale to speak at graduation

By LIZZIE TANNEN

Former Vice President Walter Mondale '50 will give the keynote speech at this year's Commencement to take place on Sunday, May 18. Mondale was picked to replace the speaker chosen initially who, according to President Mike McPherson, had to cancel due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict. McPherson said that disclosing the initial speaker's identity would be unfair to him or her. {more}

Our perspective

No one wants to be doing homework into the wee hours of the morning. Ideally, we would all have put the books away by 2 a.m. every night. Yet for many if not all Macalester students, our studies often continue until much later and occasionally last all night. It is not a matter of irresponsibility or poor study habits; Macalester students are engaged and we work hard. Often, that means working late. {more}

Do Something: Opportunities abound on campus

By MICHAEL BARNES

Today is Friday, Feb. 21, and the warmth of spring has begun to encroach. The temperatures are rising, and the snow is rapidly returning as water to the Earth. People emerge from their myriad caves, shedding their winter coats. Everywhere energy returns to the long beleaguered Macalester community, slowly but surely.

Even the college Administration takes note of the increase in student activity. Why else was this week chosen over all others as Sexual Awareness Week? Like a rifle sale before the open of hunting season, the proliferation of prophylactics is one sure sign of what soon may be a festooning frenzy of fervent festivities. {more}

Do chickens have feelings too?

By ALEX KOLES

While obese people are suing fast-food chains, another attack is underway concerning the welfare of the animals consumed at fast-food chains, namely chickens. McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's have conceded to the organization named PETA, (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The aforementioned corporations made adjustments with their suppliers by requiring that chickens have more room to roam and egg laying hens have access to more water. These efforts increase my utility while eating a chicken sandwich because I know the quality of the meat is higher, but PETA's recent global attack is too altruistic. {more}

The debate continues: The draft is still the only alternative

By DAN UREVICK-ACKELSBURG

I appreciate the response of the Macalester community to my article on the draft, but would like to clarify my "dumbfounding logic" for Daniel Sword. Sword misrepresents what I said and makes simplistic generalizations that make his stance problematic. I hope that with this letter, and possibly a slightly more thorough analysis of what I said, things will be clearer. {more}

A runner's gentle soul and a runner's gentle knee

By KATHERINE TYLEVICH

In the glory day of my awkward Middle School years, I received the devastating news that my hand-eye coordination was "satisfactory at best." While my team effort and ability to take orders and listen were both deemed excellent, any activity involving basic human movement was on the border between average and sub-par. I am not a born athlete, and I am not a born champion. The mere thought of long-distance running once triggered such hysteria and hyperventilation within me that I was diagnosed with Exercise Induced Asthma without much further testing. The doctor prescribed an old-school, expanding inhaler and weeks of intense psychotherapy. What he failed to prescribe, however, was a healthy dose of self-esteem and a weekly Monday-night yoga class. {more}
Adopt a senior and adopt a highway of-fun

By ANONYMOUS

It is now so cold we want to die and the bleak, frigid pilgrimage to campus, wrought with icy peril and sub-zero gusts of wind, is a source of daily sorrow. It is this dire situation that has prompted a brilliant plan to promote inter-class solidarity here on the Macalester campus… and possibly many of Macalester's other "core values" like internationalism, academic excellence and multiculturalism (if that's still a core value). {more}

Closely-watched Trains: Penumbra does good with Wilson

By KRISTEN SHAW

In a Humanities and Cultural Studies class I took freshman year, I wrote a fairly decent paper in response to a famous critic, arguing that the music video is one of the highest forms of art because it combines every other kind of art––narrative, dance, visual imagery, music, and advertising. I might have actually deserved the B+ I got on that paper if I went back and rewrote it, replacing the phrase "music video" with "Penumbra Theater's production of August Wilson's Two Trains Running." {more}

Sondre Lerche: cold weather music to warm your heart

By MAURA McANDREW

The final track on Sondre Lerche's debut album, Faces Down, is called "Rosebud," a subtle nod to the impending springtime evident on the entire record. Faces Down is great cold weather music, and why shouldn't it be? It was released late last year by 19-year-old Sondre Lerche, who hails from Norway. The front cover of the album is all grays and blues, with a subdued-looking Lerche standing in front of a stark background. Upon first listen, this album may seem the same: mellow, cool, and, except for a few songs, laid way back. But upon closer listening, it becomes much more like another photograph, the one within the album's liner notes. This shows the same young wholesome Lerche up close in an almost-silhouette, sunlight streaming behind him. {more}
