Arts, identity and internationalism

Macalester’s devotion to internationalism will be on display Feb. 26 through March 1 during the school’s annual International Week.

The theme for this year’s event is, “The Arts, Identity and Internationalism.” “These themes are often looked over in international studies,” said Natalie Mettler ’03, who helped to organize the event. The International Week Committee, the International Center and Sunday News are sponsoring the event.

This year’s keynote speaker is Guatam Dasgupta, a professor of drama and theater at Skidmore College.

He will discuss “Interculturalism and the Arts: Contested Frontiers,” on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the John B. Davis Lecture Hall.

Other topics include a discussion of visual arts on Tuesday, music on Wednesday, and dramatic arts on Thursday. The week concludes with the International Dinner on Friday, March 1 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. At the dinner, the Internationalism Award will be presented to a student who has exemplified a commitment to internationalism, academic merit and service to the community.
