The Banshee still cries (and begs and pleads) for submissions

By ANDREA BRONSON and RENEE LEPREAU
Contributing Writer

After spending two weeks fervently advertising and waiting for a good fix of student creativity, we eagerly approached The Banshee's submission box.
Andrea rushed at the box with Renee standing behind her saying, "Oh, the goodly delights that await us!" Andrea pushed her aside roughly, tearing the box apart with her teeth, anxious to get to the delicious art and literary center of the box. Instead, she sank her teeth into … straw wrappers?
What the hell? The student body has spoken and all they have to say is straw wrappers? We choose not to interpret this as a sign of Mac's blatant disdain for the aesthetic tradition.
For the few of you that have submitted, rock on! We love your enthusiasm and hard work, but the overall lack of submissions is still depressing.
Perhaps students just aren't feeling artsy this semester.
Perhaps they are just too shy and tender to expose their sensitive and creative sides to the cruel world.
Perhaps they are too lazy and/or busy to trudge to the Info Desk or a computer.
Maybe Macalester students just don't have anything to say.
When Andrea arrived on campus in the Fall, she quickly discovered that none of the college's art and literary magazines were operating. She began a search to find someone, anyone, who knew anything about the art and literary magazines.
Eventually, the English Department put her in touch with the former editor of The Banshee, the student run magazine. He entrusted the magazine to her, hoping that she would have a smoother time running it than he had. Soon Renee got on board as co-editor and we compiled a small and faithful staff.
Originally The Banshee was a feminist magazine, an alternative to The Chanter (which we quickly learned was our historic rival: truce?).
Over the past few years, The Banshee has evolved into a forum for any type of creative expression. We are continuing in this vein, offering a completely blank slate to Macalester students. We marched through countless org meetings, MCSG red tape and budget forms to resurrect The Banshee.
So please, take advantage of this creative space. What is there to lose? Channel that passion and energy you exert on Café Mac comment cards into a creative piece!
Submitting is easy, we promise. There is a submission box in the Campus Center by the Info Desk, a Banshee mailbox upstairs in the Student Activities Center, or a good old email address at banshee@macalester.edu.
Submissions are anonymously judged by a committee and all artwork will be returned.
Anyone can be on the committee if they come to the meetings. We are still searching for a cover.
Macalester cannot really be this detached from the aesthetic. So dig up something out of your archives or create something new and exciting, and submit! See your name in print and earn prestige and recognition all over campus!
We appreciate any and all submissions. Please don't let apathy kill Macalester's artistic forum. Struggling artists on a shoestring budget cannot stay afloat very long in a sea of disinterest.
