Student Artwork on Display in Local Exhibitions

Macalester student artwork will be shown in two local exhibitions during March. A ceramic teapot titled “Tycho” by Lisa Berman ’03 has been accepted into an exhibition titled “Visual Literacy” hosted by the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul. The exhibition is the first-ever all-state juried student art competition for college students in Minnesota. The exhibition can be seen at the College of Visual Arts Orbit Gallery and runs from Feb. 26-March 29. Seven Macalester students from Fall 2001 ceramic classes had work accepted into the third biennial “Clay Bodies by Student Bodies” exhibition at Gustavus Adolphus College. Works on display include pieces by Emily Anderson ’03, Lisa Berman ’03, Sarah Colins ’02, Ellen Corrigan ’05, Heather Falk ’05, Kristine Schaaf ’03 and Carolyn Waters ’04. The work will be on display from March 5 to April 16 at the Hillstrom Museum of Art on the Gustavus Adolphus campus. (Staff reports)

Macalester hosts (Anti)Stress Symposium

From March 5-14 Macalester will host the (Anti)Stress Symposium, a series of events concerning stress at Macalester and related topics. The symposium aims “to offer some information about what’s going on with regard to stress at Macalester as well as some realistic ways to help students deal with stress,” according to Megan Greeley ’02, one of the student organizers. Events include a presentation of study results about stress at Macalester, a talk on the process of dealing with stress, and free shoulder massages at the Campus Center. This year’s conference joins an ongoing effort on the part of the Psychology department to hold yearly symposiums on issues related to Macalester’s psychological health. Last year the department sponsored a symposium on depression. This symposium has been a collaboration of efforts by the psychology department, the Psychology Club, Health Services, and WHAM.
