Swimming and diving teams receive all-conference honors

At the MIAC championships this past weekend, Joe Hanes ’03 received two all-conference honors with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.65 and third place in the 1650-yard freestyle, finishing in 16:50.38.

Janna Lundquist ’03 fell just short of all-MIAC certificates with fifth-place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 1:02.36 and 2:14.74 respectively. Lundquist’s times in both events set new school records.

The women’s 400-yard medley team of Lundquist, Lisa Lendway ’03, Johanna Moore ’03 and Natalie Ross ’05 also set a new school record with a time of 4:15.97, finishing fifth place.

Diver Liz Fitzgerald ’03 also came close to all-conference honors by placing fourth place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Fitzgerald scored 327.75 in the 1-meter event and 379.75 in the 3-meter event.

The men finished fifth place in the conference while the women finished seventh.

Bob Pearson, who completed his 13th season as head coach of the swimming and diving programs, was named Men’s Coach of the Year and Women’s Co-Coach of the Year by the MIAC.

Women’s tennis edged by Bethel, 5-4

Women’s tennis began its conference schedule with a close 5-4 loss to Bethel on Saturday after losing 7-2 at St. Cloud State on the previous day.

Melissa Lavasani ’03 and Sarah Crangle ’04 won at number one doubles, 8-4. In singles play, number three Yui Sirisanthana ’02 came back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to win the second set, 7-5, and then won the third set super tiebreaker, 10-8. Erin Case ’05 won at number four, 6-2, 6-4. Maylin Kesienich ’05 won at number six, 7-5, 6-0.
