Response to Jonathan Scheff

I just want to say, on behalf of all lactose intolerant-vegan-tree-huggers, I found Mr. Scheff's letter to the editor in last week's issue of The Mac Weekly extremely offensive and insensitive. Furthermore, how egotistical can one get? Why should the Macalester student even care about his late night dairy cravings when we have better things to do like de-mining Iraq or going to Massage Club every Wednesday night? I will agree with one of his statements, however … his poetry sucks. For the good of all Macalester English majors, for the love of God, spare us all!

Recycling Too Often Neglected

Recycling is a relatively painless way of helping the environment. There are a lot of lazy kids like me who neither protest for environmental issues nor give much mind to the Styrofoam cups at the Grillé. I feel like I'm doing my part in recycling beer bottles and paper. However, at Macalester this task is not as easy as it seems. Though a great number of people do recycle, trash cans are often filled with plastics, cans and most of all paper. Why, when there are recycle bins, do students opt to throw paper in the trash. Are there not enough bins around the school to truly encourage people to recycle? In the library, the academic buildings and in the dorms there is usually one set of recycling bins per floor, while there are trash cans in every room. I suggest that most trash cans should be complemented by a recycle bin. This is a very cheap, environmentally conscious step the school could and should take. It is no windmill, but the act certainly would encourage students to recycle and demonstrate the administration's commitment to creating an eco-friendly campus.
