Sports Round-up

Women's Track and Field

The women's track and field team had a decent warm-up las Friday for the upcoming MIAC Championships. The Scots acquitted themselves well against teams from St. Thomas, St. Olaf, Hamline, Concordia, Augsburg, St. Catherine, UW-Stout, UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Platteville and St. Scholastica. The most productive event was the 2333 m. run, in which Francie Streich '06 scored a second place and Renee Schaefer '04 received fourth place. Other high scorers were Kirsten Fristad '05 with a second in the 55 m. high hurdles, Emily Stafford '06 with a second in the 800 m. run, Katie Christenson '04 placed third in shot put and Elizabeth Durney '03 came in fourth out of 51 runners in the 200 m. dash.

Men's Track and Field

The men's track and field team faced some tough competition last weekend from St. Olaf, St. Thomas, Hamline, Concordia, Augsburg, UW-Stout, UW-Plattteville and Northwestern. Some exemplary performances were handed in by Ssebbaale Sserembra '05 with a third place in triple jump, and Mikhail Higgins, who took fourth in the 400 m. dash. Both men's and women's track team turn their attention next to the MIAC Championships. The action starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday night and recommences at 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Baseball

Baseball faced a disappointing start to their season with two losses in their doubleheader against Valley City State last weekend. The second game was decided by the 10 run rule after only five innings, but the Scots still played hard, scoring all their runs in the fourth and fifth innings of game one and managing some impressive plays in the bargain. A Josh Oritz '05 hit brought in Joel Bettingen '04 who also got a couple of outs in the fourth inning. Mike Merrill '05 brought in Andrew Percival '06 then scored on the back end of a double steal.

Valley City unfortunately left the Scots little wiggle room in either game. Men's Baseball is now gearing up for a match against Minnesota-Duluth on March 9. Good luck to them!

Fastpitch Softball

Fastpitch softball also found their efforts frustrated last week in their game against Northwestern. Despite their tough loss, they have nothing to be ashamed of. Chris Soma '04, Kat Sprole '05, and Carrie Rosenthal '06 all scored runs for the Scots while Pitcher Alisa Seifert '05 struck out five batters in seven innings. The team next travels to the Plymouth Dome to play against Luther, Iowa March 7 at 10 p.m.
