Carleton students split with Coca-Cola

Following weeks of debate, the Carleton College Student Association (CSA) voted 12-8 in favor of not renewing the campus’s contract with Coca-Cola on March 8.

According to the “Campaign to Stop Killer Coke” newsletter, this will result in the removal of 42 Coke vending machines from the campus.

Coca-Cola sent Corporate Media Relations Issues Director Lori Billingsly, Director of Communications in Latin America Rafael Fernandez Quiros and three representatives from Coca-Cola Enterprises, the company’s largest bottler, to Carleton’s campus in order to present Coke’s view on the issue of human rights violations in Latin America.

Campaign to Stop Killer Coke’s director Ray Rogers represented Latin American labor union SINALTRAINAL’s position.

According to the Campaign to Stop Killer Coke newsletter, the CSA decided in January to renew Carleton’s multi-year contract with Coke, but had not yet signed a contract because the student government was still finalizing the details.

Carleton senior Mike Schorsch heard about the Campaign to Stop Killer Coke and began a petition, which hundreds of students signed, to end the school’s contract with Coke. CSA senators then brought the issue up for discussion and ultimately voted not to renew the contract.

According to the CSA’s web site the campus will replace the Coke machines with machines from Pepsi and the American Bottling Company, which produces 7-Up, A&W and Welch’s juices.
