Spotlight
Spotlight shines on Suman Ambwani and friends

By JAMES HAMILTON
Features Editor

It's ten o' clock on Wednesday night and Suman Ambwani '03 is about to go to the Tap. I would go—but The Mac Weekly has ruined my life.
&nbps;

Easy questions first, Suman. Major?

I'm a psychology and sociology major.

Plans for the summer?

I don't really know. I'm going home this summer to Bombay to annoy my family. My grandma is celebrating her birthday so I my whole family is going to get together.

Do you have a big family?

There were about 85 people at the last family reunion. I have to admit that I didn't necessarily remember everyone's name.

How about next year?

I'm going to Texas A & M for graduate school to study clinical psychology. So someday I'll be asking the questions, James.

Is Texas A & M in the Final Four?

I don't know—everyone asks me that.

I have no clue either. Everything I know about basketball I learned from Sega NBA 2K2. How's your homework this semester?

I'm so close to finishing my honors project. I'm studying gender and body image in the context of romantic relationships. It's been a long process. I sort of go through intervals of working really hard and then taking long breaks.

Let's talk Macalester—

Ok.
&nbps;

...

I really appreciate the people at Macalester.

Definitely. I remember one time when Jane Strauss stayed in the Psychology Lab until one in the morning running stats with us and answering questions. I really appreciate that professors leave their doors open for students to just stop in and chat.

[Suman has a hooked-up room: tons of space, plenty of seating arrangements, and none of that standard issue fluorescent bullshit. No wonder people choose her room to meet before leaving for the Tap.]

You lived off-campus last year. Do you miss it?

When we were looking for a place for this year we got a room on campus just in case. It was really nice last semester when I was busy with applications and my paper.

[Enter Andrea.]

Did you live together?

Yeah.

Yes.

[Enter Stephen and Neerav.]

It would also be nice to have a place for graduation when my family visits.

You should tell him about Bridget Jones.

What's this for?

It's for The Mac Weekly.

The Spotlight interview.

[No one reads it. Enter Hande and Eleni]

You should tell him about Bridget Jones' Diary.

All of my friends like serious foreign films and I like really bad Hollywood movies.

Didn't you read the book?

What is one thing you are looking forward to after graduation?

Marrying Suman.

Cooking my own food.

Looking forward to my sister's wedding.

More time to drink.

Your sister is getting married?

She's getting married in January. It's sort of a problem—she's marrying an Egyptian Canadian. So they're trying to do sort of a new age wedding with camels and Mounties in Egypt. I think they want to get married in the desert.
