Jane Turk ’02 to address graduates

The task of summing up the four years spent at Macalester is a challenging one. This spring, in addition to papers, finals, and all the other graduation activities, Jane Turk ’02 has to accomplish that task. Turk has been nominated to give the senior address at commencement this year.

The process by which a speaker is chosen is simple. A committee, consisting of four faculty and staff members and one student, meets early in spring semester. Faculty or students nominate seniors that they feel should give the speech. The committee also looks through a list of students with exceptionally high GPAs. From these lists, the committee invites a handful of students to apply. The nominees then send a resume and sample speech to the nominations committee. The committee narrows down the number of nominees, conducts interviews, and selects the speaker.

Turk, a communication studies and cultural studies double major, is excited to be giving the speech.

Turk also recently received the Watson Fellowship, which she plans to begin in August (see article page 1).

Despite the pressure of giving the senior address, Turk is optimistic. “I’m just honored to be chosen,” she said.
