Spring-a-what? Spring-a-ling invades campus

Recently Macalester has been inundated with advertisements for events with “spring” in the title, and I’ve been seeing lots of first-years and transfer students getting confused about the abundance of shows that are occurring during the upcoming festive April weekends, especially the ones beginning with “spring.”
This weekend there are several concerts and performances to go to, so music fans should have no problem finding things to do come the 16th of April. In addition to the Jazz concert Friday night (8 p.m.) which features a lengthy piece by the band’s conductor and a funky compilation featuring yours truly on the turntable, there is a massive choral concert on Saturday (8 p.m.) and Macalester’s heralded annual electronic music events, the Spring-A-Ling.
Featuring a massive wall-to-wall sound system and multiple DJs from around the country, Spring-A-Ling is an annual event arranged by WMCN that is so loud it can be heard outside of Kagin Ballroom, the epicenter of it all. The building blocks that make up this massive event are as follows: First of all, the infamous Minnesota Wall of Bass, arguably the best sound system in town, will be stacked to the roof, providing glass-shaking bass to keep the crowd moving all night. The DJs featured include DJ Terry Mullen from San Diego, legendary house DJ for over 10 years; DJ Hyperactive, whose integration of hip-hop technique and minimalist techno music are second to none; local DJ heroes the ROKKEN project; and Unseenneccesity vs. Dialect, two dedicated members of the Macalester music and radio community, and also techno music experts. But don’t fret if techno’s not your thing. In addition to a smaller, mellower audio setup close to the door, the evening will be kicked-off by me, HelloDJ, with some (G-d willing) intelligently arranged and performed turntablism/hip-hop.
Spring-A-Ling is on Saturday, April 17, at 8 p.m. in Kagin Ballroom. Entrance is free with a college ID; non-college students have to pay $5.

Dale Rubin (a.k.a HelloDJ) will be spinning records at Spring-a-ling. Check him out and drop him a line at drubin@macalester.edu.
