'Vamos a jugar con tierra': A poem for Latino week

By YONG-HO KIM

I had never heard the term dirt before. It was in a chemistry lab, and a bunch of guys had put "dirt" in the tube and were arguing whether or not it could have live stuff in it. I couldn't understand the argument (dirt in the tubes? maybe it's some bacteria?) until my labmate explained to me that it was the soil. The soil from the ground? Why do you call it dirt?

Is Macalester the genderqueer paradise it could be?

By JOSEPHINE WILLIAMS

Are you genderqueer? Well, have you thought about it? But wait, you say, I'm not even "regular" queer. Not a problem, straight people can be genderqueer, too. Don't be shy; take this self-diagnostic genderqueer test: Are you tired of having expectations placed on you that are based on your genitalia? Do you refuse to live within the socially accepted duality of gender? Do you feel like the biological sex you were born into is sometimes or all of the time an imperfect or insufficient fit? Do you in any way transgress the boundaries of the gender norms imposed upon you?

Keep the wind blowing and the money flowing

By DAN MORING

By now, most people at Macalester have seen the new wind turbine spinning above Olin-Rice. For the most part, the response has been very positive; people, especially students, understand that renewable energy is the direction in which we need to head. But moves underway at the state Legislature would severely compromise Minnesota's drive to develop its indigenous renewable sources of energy.

I haven't had my fill of cream puffs and neither has Louie

By KATHERINE TYLEVICH

I was sixteen, going on twelve when I first visited the magical world of Disney. And not the business-oriented aristocrat of theme parks that is EuroDisney, mind you. I'm talking about the all-American melting pot of learning and discovery, coming at you from the West Side. While, it is true that I would feel more at ease amongst the European assemblage of a wine-sipping Mickey Mouse, a doctrinal, stock-exchanging Donald Duck and an impish, but money-embezzling Pluto the Dog overseas, I felt that the California streets could potentially offer a lesson in tolerance and durability. I was wrong, however. I learned nothing from the streets. They were littered with remnants of fading childhood and materialist treats (like delicious relished soy and turkey dogs!). Notwithstanding, I learned a thing or two from the roller-coaster operator, Bruce. Namely, I learned that if I stuck my arms out of the ride again, he would break them off, lambaste me with them, and finally sell them as souvenirs to curious, browsing tourists.

Macalester Springfest 2003: music preview

By MAURA McANDREW

Well everyone's favorite Saturday is here again, and along with the dunk tank and whatever other crazy surprises it holds, Springfest always features good music. This year there is a diverse lineup of Macalester bands, local acts, and nationally known acts ranging from hip-hop to emo to power pop to Chicano. The music starts at 12:45 p.m. and goes on until… well, you'll probably be passed out by then, won't you? I've compiled a quick guide for those of you who plan to remain standing for at least some of the bands. Besides, what could be better than an afternoon of free, top-quality music? In the words of last year's headliner Rah Digga, "Can I get a 'fuck yeah'?"

The Common Place releases CD

By MAURA McANDREW

There are more talented Mac bands than just the ones playing at Springfest, and one prominent one happens to be The Common Place, which features Mac sophomore Brendan Viele on guitar, and his brother, drummer J.T., who will be a freshman at Mac in the fall. The band is rounded out by two U of M students, Josh Johnson (guitar) and Chris Amundsen (bass), as well as Hennepin Tech student Joe Bernard (lead vocals). Mac students have had the opportunity to see The Commonplace play numerous times, most notably at Fallfest and Springfest 2002.
