Communications Studies faculty were unsupportive of department

It’s hard enough defending being a Communication Studies major, but when the faculty doesn’t even support the department, it is a real blow to my academic esteem. In response to Professor Clay Steinman’s remarks regarding the end of the Communication and Media Studies program, (The Mac Weekly, April 25) I would like to offer one unheard student’s perspective. This is a great loss not only for the majors and students within the department but also for the entire college. The hardest part for me to deal with is the faculty’s complete lack of support for the Communications program. Steinman commented that ending the department "will enable us [the faculty] to focus our energies better." Great, too bad their energies were never focused on the department in the first place. It’s one thing to change your focus of study within academia—its completely different when this change affects a large group of students. With future funding cuts inevitable, I hope other faculty will be able to rise in support of their department rather than question the merits of their own program. Personally, I loved my experiences as a Communications Studies major and I am saddened that my professors do not share my love. This has left a bad taste in my mouth, and I will forever remember graduating with a major that even my own faculty did not want.

Queer Union office vandalism a hate crime

My queer safe space has been violated. I came to the Queer Union office and on the door I read the words "Fags suck." Some idiot wrote these words over our "Queer Union" sign with three symbols on it: a heart, the equality sign, and the pink triangle (a sign of gay pride). My heart was crushed, I felt unequal, and my pride was diminished. Congratulations perpetrator. Mission accomplished. Your hate crime was just that—hateful and a crime. I hope you feel better about yourself. I hope your ego was boosted. I hope your self-esteem went through the roof. Did writing "Fags suck" on our sign make you feel like a man? I’m guessing that you’re a man, because only a cowardly man would do something as stupid and childish as this. I’m angry that you violated my queer safe space. It’s not fair that I have to go through this world dealing with bastards like you just because I choose to love someone of the same sex. Yeah, fags suck. We suck on tits and dicks and cunts. And we love doing it. So get the fuck used to it. Beause we’re never going to stop sucking.
