St. Paul Police still searching for suspects

By PETER GARTRELL
Staff Writer

At 4:30 a.m. on April 25, the St. Paul Police received a report of a sexual assault in Wallace Hall. An intruder entered an unlocked dorm room and sexually assaulted a prospective student while threatening her host, a Macalester student, with a hand gun.
Police have made no arrests in connection with the assault said Sgt. David Schoen.
The suspect is described as a male, possibly Asian, of unknown age, 5 foot 6 inches to 5 foot 7 inches tall, with a thin build and short hair. He was wearing black pants, a dark shirt, and a scarf or bandana across his face.
Police responded to the scene within minutes and worked with campus securityto sweep the dormitory’s perimeter. However, a point of entry could not be determined according to campus security director Terry Gorman.
Police could not release any addition details about the case because it is still under investigation. Schoen confirmed police were following up on numerous tips that have been reported, and are "in the preliminary stages" of analyzing evidence. Investigators returned to campus Wednesday afternoon to interview students about the early morning crime.
According to Schoen the intruder, who the victims described as having amber eyes and amber skin, could be of Asian or mixed-race decent. He said the identification of a suspect in the case has been difficult because the intruder’s description could describe thousands of people in the Twin Cities.
The case does not appear to be part of a wider pattern of crimes said Schoen, "I don’t think we have a serial rapist on our hands," he said.
According to Schoen, this kind of crime is rare in St. Paul but cautioned students to remain vigilant.
Since the assault, Macalester has taken steps to increase on-campus security, including frequently checking that outside doors are locked. Gorman said the college hired an additional security guard to patrol residence halls from 10 p.m.-6 a.m and has worked with Police to increase area patrols.
In addition to more stringent security measures, community forums addressing campus security issues were held this week to advise task forces being set up by Gorman and Hamre. The college is trying to find a balance between safety and community said Hamre, "we don’t want to feel like we’re in a lock-down state."
Hamre added that no matter what the college does to increase safety, students must play a role. Gorman agrees, saying "Be aware of your surroundings … Be vigilant."
Police request that anyone with information that might relate to this incident should call the sex crimes unit at (651) 292-3685.
