MCSG passed three resolutions relating to the Judicial Forum process and the fact that The Mac Weekly did not print last week.

The first criticized “all members in the judicial forum process who breached the confidentiality of process, by producing documentation about the proceedings to The Mac Weekly, or any other source.”

The second said “it is inappropriate for a member of the Macalester community to threaten another member of the community with legal action to prevent the publication of substantiated facts relevant to the public interest of the community, without prior discussion.” It criticized the threat that was made, and asserted the right of The Mac Weekly to print the article.

The third criticized the grievance procedures as a whole, recommending that “Macalester reevaluate its grievance processes for sexual harassment as well as other forms of harassment through a decision-making process involving all of the college’s constituencies.” This resolution also recommended that “this reevaluation focus, in part, on issues of:

a) privacy/confidentiality of the grievance process, specifically the judicial forum;

b) clearly defining the responsibility of community members, especially faculty and staff, to report allegations of harassment when they become aware of them to a college grievance officer;

c) whether the amount of specificity and detail in the current policy is adequate;

d) whether the current policy is clear to, accessible to, and comfortable for students-do students know where to go if they experience harassment and do they know what procedures exist to deal with allegations of harassment? Do they feel welcome reporting allegations to grievance officers?”
