Student to be sentenced on child porn charges

by MICHAEL BARNES

Recent Macalester graduate Joshua Bertsch ’03 pled guilty on August 11 to 19 counts of child pornography possession and one count of child pornography distribution. District Judge Joanne Smith, who is in charge of the case, scheduled Bertsch’s sentencing hearing for September 30. {more}

New president: The Mac Weekly’s Lizzie Tannen sat down and talked with President Rosenberg about leadership, goals and Coca-Cola

By LIZZIE TANNEN

Before I meet Brian Rosenberg, I know I’m going to like him. We’re both Jewish, we’re both from New York, we both like books. McPherson was accessible and all, but this guy is going to be My President. We’re going to be tight. {more}
Community reacts to graduate’s summer suicide

By BRENT HECHT

Quiet, alone, and in her dorm room; Jeanette Foster ’03 died in much the same way she lived at Macalester.

Foster suffocated herself with gas in her Kirk Hall single the morning of May 14, two days after her class’ commencement ceremony. She chose not to walk the stage with her classmates. {more}

Loungin’ it all day long

By KAI WILHELM

This year’s first-year class is the largest since 1969 and balloons the student body to its most populous state since 1972. From the overcrowded lunch lines in Café Mac to the frustration felt by many who joined waiting lists over ten students long for some entry-level courses, the progressively larger class sizes are leaving their mark all over campus. {more}

Quietly and mostly to myself
Meet the Quietly...

By ERIK MORALES

It Starts.

Welcome to a new school year. My name is Erik Morales and I have been given the honor of being the editor for this column. A little about myself, I am from southeast Los Angeles and currently a senior here at Mac. I have co-chaired ¡Adelante! and Bridges, was chosen for the Mellon Minority Undergraduate Fellowship and take part in Student Allies for Academic Success, the Multicultural Advisory Committee and the American Studies Steering Committee. WARNING: expect my contributions for this column to not only be very critical but also radical in nature. I have seen and encountered too much here that holding back will surely give my conscience a nervous breakdown. {more}

Environmental commitment a low priority

By DANNY SCHWARTZMAN and HARIS AQEEL

We can all agree that Macalester is effective in encouraging social activism and implementing its progressive mission statement. Environmental sustainability is, however, one area in which the college has failed to meet its stated ideals. {more}

Cancun: sun, fun and WTO

By ROLAND McKAY

When I heard the World Trade Organization (WTO) was holding its next ministerial meeting in a remote hamlet in the farthest reaches of the State of Yucatan in southern Mexico, I thought the occasion presented a unique opportunity two accomplish two disparate goals. First, to provide background on this year’s WTO agenda and, second, to indulge you in a belated critique of one of this year’s best kept secrets in below-the-radar independent cinema (you might have missed it in theaters). {more}
Orientation: is group nudity the answer?

By HERSCHEL NACHLIS

Anthony Burgess’ Alex de Large would certainly have great pains in his gulliver if he somehow were forced to sit through a Macalester first-year orientation. Granted Macalester is one of many colleges that facilitate such suffering through its first-year orientation every fall, but this does not excuse the practice. For the sake of those on campus who have already lived through the ordeal, hopefully those of us who happened to survive last week’s barrage of icebreakers and name games will not resort to Alex’s characteristic ultra-violence to release our frustrations. {more}

First-years reflect on studying, sex and staying up

By PETER GARTRELL

The freshmen—excuse me, first-years—have arrived. Five hundred and thirteen of them to be exact.

Despite their youth, they are a savvy group, and it seemed appropriate to give them a forum to share observations and anecdotes about their first week-and-a-half in college. So without further ado, the first-years share their first thoughts. {more}

Women’s Soccer Held to Scoreless Draw against Augsburg in Conference Opener

By BO RYDZE

Macalester’s women’s soccer team played at Augsburg this Tuesday in what proved to be a very frustrating and one-sided match. After 110 minutes of regulation play and two overtimes, the score stood at 0-0. After the first 15 minutes the Scots dominated play, keeping the ball in their possession over 90 percent of the time. Augsburg was outshot 25-5 by the Mac women, who nearly doubled their average number of shots per game. {more}

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Macalester women’s volleyball team won the Augsburg Invitational tournament in Minneapolis last Saturday after sweeping all four of its matches. On Friday, the Scots swept through Augsburg and St. Scholastica in straight games, and kicked off Saturday with a four game win over University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire. {more}
Losses in Colorado: A Bump in the Road for Men’s Soccer?

By BRIONY VARDA

Last weekend, the Macalester men’s soccer team flew to Colorado Springs to play University of Texas-Dallas and host Colorado College. As both were regional opponents, victories against them would have put Macalester in a comfortable position to gain a post-season playoff berth. {more}

Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then

By KATHERINE TYLEVICH

One hot late-August evening, I finally found my antebellum Santa Claus in a post-Confederate world. And honestly, I found him to be quite fetching, this Pappy of the Southern Wood. Because, really, who’s to tell me that a portly, white-bearded man between the ages of 60 and 100 dancing silently in the darkness of the Smoky Mountains isn’t “my type.” I’m only human, aren’t I? And as far as I can remember, he was wearing a fitted, striped overall ensemble complete with a white cowboy hat, wasn’t he? And, sweet God almighty, there is no mistaking that this man called Pappy was wearing his dancing shoes that night. No sir, the clicks of Pappy’s leather pointed boots could be heard all the way from the government-owned, wooden mountain-shacks of Tennessee to the sprawling, gold-plated palaces of rural Tunisia. Kind of. {more}

Raging stylist: Scorsese retrospective continues

By BEN SACHS

This weekend, the Oak Street Cinema continues its Martin Scorsese retrospective with two crime dramas, Mean Streets (1973) and GoodFellas (1990). Along with Taxi Driver and Raging Bull (which opened the series last weekend) these are some of the most frequently canonized works in contemporary American movies. They are among the only contemporary titles to share space in popular culture alongside the likes of Citizen Kane and Psycho. The weight attached to classic films often makes fresh viewing seem daunting and repeats borderline irrelevant––a particuarly curious status in this case since the works feel so pre-viewed through the singular point of view of their maker. {more}

Davis lecture hall on Fridays and Saturdays (with the exception of Songs From the Second Floor and 23). {more}

Bruce Springsteen: still the voice of America?

By Maura McAndrew

With the country in its current state of war and a floundering economy, those musicians with a political message are being given the cold shoulder in favor of flag-waving patriots; those who pose no threat to the patriotism being pushed on us by the Bush administration. One exception to this rule is Bruce Springsteen, who in the past few years has gone from aging rock icon to one of the most influential and relevant rock stars in the country. {more}

I am proud to be webmaster of this fin *ahem*, well, anyhow the best College newspaper produced in the 30 Mac Basement: enjoy and visit a lot because if I average 5 hits a day again this year my life will become meaningless and worthless.
Hey, and this on-line edition is only 3 hours late, yay!

Some of the benefits of living in a former lounge include a TV and free cable. Nothing can make Macalester students smile like free C-SPAN and C-SPAN2. For more on the effects of the largest first-year class since 1969, link. Photo by Peter Bartz-Gallagher.
