Fallfest revives fall frolic

By LIZZIE TANNEN

The Macalester tradition known as Fallfest breathes new life this semester thanks to a new Macalester tradition, the Programming Board. An outdoor concert similar to the annual Springfest but on a smaller scale, Fallfest will take place this year on September 20th starting at 5 p.m. at Bateman Plaza and will feature four musical acts. {more}

By CASEY REYNOLDS

Tikkun organizer Marisa Handler spoke in the Weyerhaueser Chapel about peace in Israel Tuesday. Handler is from the Tikkun Community Association. Tikkun, which means "healing" in Hebrew, focuses its efforts on creating a sustainable peace in Israel and Palestine. Approximately one hundred people were in attendance to hear Handler present Tikkun's stance on the current situation in Palestine and Israel. {more}

A caring presence for vocation and life

By MICHAEL DICKEL

Perhaps you have met me on campus. Or, perhaps you have no idea who I am. If you have met me, you may think you know me: Michael Dickel, Director of the Macalester Academic Excellence Center (MAX). Or perhaps you know me as Interim Staff Coordinator of the Council of Multicultural Affairs (CMA). Perhaps you know me yet another way: College Writing Teacher and Writing Counselor. Maybe, although less likely, you know me as Michael Dickel, poet. {more}

Ecological literacy: The missing pillar at Macalester

By DANIEL UNGIER

Over one billion years ago, east of where the Twin Cities presently stand, a large rift formed in the earth's crust, creating the St. Croix River Valley in which we now live and study. Over millions of years, seas grew and receded in this area, and more recently, glaciers sculpted the landscape that now defines Minnesota. {more}

Learning (or not) about storage policies with Residential Life

By LOUIS LEDDER

When I came to Macalester as a prospective student, I was told Mac was a place where people were more important than policies. Students have many unique freedoms here. For instance, it is quite easy to design independent projects and interdepartmental majors. Class scheduling is flexible. It is usually feasible to speak with a real, live person when you have a question. {more}

A reflection upon the Socratic Oath as a Faculty

By ALDEMARO ROMERO

After spending one year on sabbatical, in addition to doing a lot of research and writing, I had the opportunity to reflect on my duties as a faculty. Below is what I called "My Socratic Oath as a Faculty" which is a modified version of the one proposed in F. H. Rhodes. The Creation of the Future. The Role of the American University. Ithaca: Cornell University Press (2001). I present it here as a statement about the renewed commitment I feel as I return to my duties. {more}

War with Iraq would serve Bush's interest only

By BEN STRAUS

Whenever I go to my grandparents' house for dinner, my grandfather seriously reminds me that there is a real probability that I may be drafted for some war in central Asia. At first, I thought that he was a little out of touch with reality, but as events of the summer played out I have become less skeptical and a little more fearful that he may be right. With Vice President Dick Cheney back in hiding and the country on orange alert for a potential reprisal of last years attacks, my thoughts inevitably drift to the Middle East, specifically Iraq, where the US has maintained a palpable military presence for over ten years. {more}

Football drops independent opener, 19–14

By EMILY ANDERSON

Saturday, September 7, 2002 marked the beginning of a new era for the Macalester football team. Last November, it was decided that the Scots would no longer play a MIAC (Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) schedule, facing off against Division III powerhouses like St. John's, but would instead play a ten week independent schedule against teams whose rosters looked much more like their own. Macalester opened this new era against Beloit (WI). Unfortunately, after a promising pre-season, which included a solid performance in a scrimmage against St. Olaf, the Scots lost a nail-bitter 19–14. {more}

Mr. Fishy then BOOM

By AMY HOLTZ

Rolling down Sommerset, past Third Street, when I landed spiral like underneath my second Huffy, sonar edition, light green. This, I think, was the result of first, a small abscess in third, and me, all downhill felt the Huffy's tire slide right over it like alcohol on a teenage boy, very well, and the ground came up and at once we were down. I roll over, this could have been much bloodier, save for the petunia bed perpetually covering that street corner. {more}

Metropolis: Expressionists of the world unite!

By Ben Sachs

Of all the Fritz Lang films to be revived right now, Metropolis, playing from tonight until Thursday at the Uptown Theater, might be the fourth or fifth film I'd cull from the long list of masterpieces that the filmmaker amassed over his forty-plus year-long career. Fury (Lang's first American film) seems like the most logical choice—its cynical depiction of a US justice system overrun by lynch-mob politics feels eerily contemporary— while the utter weirdness of his neon-colored, semi-musical Rancho Notorious is a great antidote to formulaic Westerns. {more}

Back to school rock 'n' roll round-up's long-awaited return

By ROB van ALSTYNE

Minnesota in the summer-time is arguably the best thing in the world (just ask any natives or the occasional disgruntled upstate New Yorker who makes the Twin Cities their summer home). This means that occasionally a commitment to intrepid music listening takes a back seat to trips to the Dakota County Fair or backyard barbecuing. The summer time is also when the big guns (the Japanese leg of Gun's N Roses "Chinese Democracy Tour" to provide just one example) go on tour and put out records. All of which means that the summer time release pickings for artists flying under the commercial radar were on the slim side. Fortunately, even in the slow dog days of summer, quality rock music is an unstoppable force. Read on for the down-low on the latest and greatest and the occasional high-profile clunker that must be avoided at all costs (in one music editor's opinion anyway). {more}
