Volleyball Beats St. OlafBy MATT BERGERON

Contributing Writer
Macalester’s volleyball team ended St. Olaf’s hopes of an undefeated conference season last Wednesday.

After coming out slow and falling to an early 6-0 deficit in the first game, the Scots rallied to take a 12-11 lead. Unfortunately, Macalester was unable to hold the lead and ended up losing the first game 30-27.
“We just made too many mistakes [in the first game],” said team captain May Lin Kessenich ‘05. “They really only scored about ten points in that game, the rest came off of our errors.”
The energy level for the Scots greatly increased in the second game, and the team jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead. Macalester won game two 30-26. The Scots followed up by winning the third game 30-24, and the fourth game 30-25, winning the match 3-1.
The Scots used their height advantage to out block their opponents 36 to 27. Co-captains Maggie Buttermore ’06 and Bethany Tate ‘05 registered a combined 15 blocks. In addition, co-captain Kessenich contributed 30 digs and Brianna Keefe-Oates ’08, who single-handedly out-set the Ollies, provided 58 of the Scots’ 59 assists.
After the match, Kessenich had nothing but positive things to say about the team’s outlook. Admitting that the team does not have an “All-American player,” she said she believes in the team’s ability to play a “relentless mental game…work really hard…and never say die.”
