Input encouraged in naming student lounge

By HARIS AQEEL

Have you been to the Campus Center basement? There’s a student lounge there now, and it’s nameless. We need you to name it and more. Read on:

(Mis)nomers

The last time you read The Mac Weekly, the lounge was to be called Kofi’s Korner. However, several students felt they were not adequately invested in the naming process. Furthermore, as most students had not experienced the ambience of the lounge, they felt they didn’t know what they were naming. We’ll correct that. Sit in the lounge, play pool, have coffee, and admire the art. We are planning a well-advertised name suggestion and filtering process that will culminate in an all-college referendum in November. You must be involved. After all, it’s your lounge—you don’t want it to be called “International Understanding,” do you? Trust us, it won’t be at all amusing after a while.

Art

The Art Alliance in conjunction with the student lounge staff will hold a monthly meeting to select the student art that will be displayed in the lounge. The rules are simple: bring your art ready to be hung or vote for your favorite pieces. All are welcome, but submitters cannot vote.

The meeting time and place will be displayed at the lounge bar. All selected art will be insured against damage and theft. Questions? Email: anieber@macalester.edu.

Consumption

Ice cream bars, microwaveable pizza, tea, coffee, cider and Hot-Pockets—all at competitive rates. All but the coffee, that is. But hey, it’s all about the ambience and we’ll have cool music.

Feedback

This is your lounge—it was designed for and by students. So tell us how we can improve it. Do you want more food? What else should we hang on the walls (aside from Haris, that is)? What music would you like? Any new TV Channels? Please let us know and we will do everything within our power (and budget) to make it happen.

Cushions

Don’t steal them.

Talk about a team effort—it’s taken almost two years to make this happen. The Dean of Students Office (especially the Queen of Deans, Laurie Hamre); the Office of Development; Campus Programs; Physical Plant; Architect extraordinaire Merle Hanson; past and present MCSGs; the Program Board; The Mac Weekly; 400 student survey respondents; Ramon and Datra (they got the funky furniture); parent, alumni, student, staff, faculty and trustee donors—none of this would have been possible without your contributions.

Thank you.

Clark Wohlferd (former student ’02-’03), Nate Abbott (nobody important ’02-’03), Edward Donkor (Has-been MCSG VP ’02-’03), Haris Aqeel (Has-been MCSG Presidente’02-’03), Miguel Nieto (Student Lounge Manager) and the Student Lounge Staff.
