Narrow victory over Concordia in soccer

With his second goal of the season, Nathan Knox ’04 led Macalester to a thrilling overtime victory over Concordia Cobbers. The Scots are now 6-2, with a perfect MIAC record of 4-0.
The Scots dominated the first half, with numerous scoring opportunities, while Concordia’s first shot on goal came in the second half. But Macalester failed to convert any of its chances. “We just couldn’t make the final pass,” midfielder Robbie Swick ’05 said, “and their keeper played tremendous.”
Against the run of play, Concordia opened the scoring 20 minutes into the second half. Brandon Root converted his sixth goal for Concordia in the 66th minute following a breakdown in Macalester’s defense. The Cobbers were brimming with confidence after the goal, but the Scots kept the pressure up, and equalized in the 86th minute. Ian Ritz ’06 lifted a free-kick in from the left side, and Patrick Kelly ’05 headed home his first goal of the season.
Regulation time ended with both teams knotted up at one goal apiece, but with less than a minute to go in the first 10-minute overtime, Knox broke the Cobbers’ hearts. From just outside the right corner of the penalty box, Knox drove a free-kick low and hard at the Concordia goalkeeper who bobbled it into the back of the net. Game, Scots.
With the win, the Scots remain atop the MIAC tied with St. Olaf (4-0). The Scots’ next game is at Hamline on Saturday, October 4.
