Early Macalester Goal Sinks Colorado College

The men’s soccer team beat rival Colorado College1-0 in a tense and closely contested match.

The only goal of the match came off of the foot of Macalester mid fielder Michael Blythe ’07 following a crossing pass by Macalester forward Joe Wertz ’06. Blythe’s goal came only 2:37 into the first period.

The Macalester men drastically out-shot their opponents for the second straight game, this time by a margin of 17-7. “Our forwards played the best they have all season as far as working on and off the ball,” defender Ian Ritz ’06 said.

Aided by a hot Mac defense in front of him, goalie Dan Schroeder ’07 was able to shut out Colorado College, with four saves.

Mac’s superior ball handling and passing abilities helped to overcome the slightly more physical Colorado team, ranked fourth in the West region. “It was probably the best game, overall, that we’ve played all season,” Ritz said.

Wertz stressed the significance of the win both for the team. “This win was very important for our confidence,” Wertz said. “It was huge to come through and play well for our fans.”

The Scots now look to carry over the dominating ball control and teamwork they used last Friday night into their upcoming game against Bethel on Oct. 16 and the huge game against current archrival Gustavus on Oct. 22.
