Playing at home last Friday evening, Macalester Volleyball beat Gustavus Adolphus College in three games, 30-19, 30-23, and 30-24. With the win, the Scots improve their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) record to 3-2.

“The match was really important because GAC and us are really similar teams,” Maggie Buttermore ’06 said. “We’re both currently in the middle of the conference.”

Bethany Tate ’05 was impressive with 12 kills on the night. In addition, Tate served three aces to a struggling Gustie defense. Lauren Eberhart ’07 also proved dangerous above the net, finishing the match with 16 kills. Kari Tanaka ’08 bolstered the Scots’ offense by supplying her teammates with 34 assists.

The Scots received defensive help from Buttermore and Stephanie Nelson ’07, who combined for ten blocks.

Macalester, St. Mary’s, and Gustavus are now tied for fifth-place in the MIAC. Concordia and Carleton remain undefeated and are locked in a first-place tie. Mac played both of those nationally-ranked teams in tough, five-game matches, losing each 2-3.

This weekend, Mac Volleyball hosts the Minnesota-Iowa Border Battle. Eight teams will compete in the tournament, including MIAC rivals St. Thomas and Concordia. All games will be played in the Field House.
