Gender

Let’s dispel the rumors and set the record straight: the class of 2004 is not 70 percent female, nor is it 75 percent female. According to preliminary data, the actual gender balance among this year’s entering students is 65 percent female and 35 percent male. While the actual numbers are not as dramatic as those of rumor, the predominance of females among this year’s entering students, both first-years and transfers, is striking.
Macalester’s total enrollment is 58 percent female and 42 percent male. The class of 2003 is 59 percent female ad 41 percent male. According to Admissions, the gender balance in the current first-year class is more of a statistical blip than an indicator of where Macalester is heading.
“We haven’t totally figured it [the reason for the gender disparity] out yet,” said Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Lorne Robinson.>>>

Look deeper into MCSG election

Christopher Messinger ’00

To the Editor:

Congratulations on your election as student body president, Kwame. I’m sure you’ll do an excellent job. I have been thinking about the election and your landslide victory, and I’ve been wondering why it was so easy for you. Your position statement wasn’t noticeably better than the others. Your posters were confusing. Although you’ve written for the Mac Weekly, I don’t particularly understand your political and ideological stances, nor have I ever asked you what you think about issues. In fact, I’ve hardly ever talked to you at all. Why then, did I vote for you? It’s a question I’ve asked myself recently.>>>
