Last weekend, Macalester hosted the St. Paul National Mid-Season Preview Volleyball Tournament. In addition to the hosts (12-5), the participating schools were Bethel (7-7), Cal State-Hayward (14-3), Central (11-5), Loras (14-6), St. Thomas (14-1) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (13-4). On Friday, the Scots defeated Loras 3-0 and Bethel 3-1, but they fell 3-0 to both Wisconsin-Whitewater and Central on Saturday.
“Friday was really good, we played good teams, we really came together and we won the games we were supposed to,” captain Sarah Graves ’04 said. “And we had good matches against Whitewater and Central: both nationally ranked teams. It gives us a little boost coming into our match with St. Thomas.”
Carley Bomstad ’04 was selected to the seven-player all-tournament team after averaging 3 kills, 1.85 blocks and 3.1 digs per game over the four matches, as well as hitting at a .409 clip. Friday’s match with Bethel also marked an impressive personal milestone for Bomstad as she spiked her 1,000th college-career kill.
As a team, the Scots hit .255 over the four-match tournament. They were lead by Maggie Buttermore ’06 with 3.2 kills per game, Bomstad at 3.0 and Bethany Tate ’05 with 2.3. Graves contributed 9.9 assists per game and May Lin Kessenich ’05 produced 6.6 digs per match.
Late Wednesday night, Macalester lost 2-3 to ninth-ranked St. Thomas at home, bringing their record to 3-3 in the conference.
