The football team moved to 4–1 on the year as they rounded out a five game home stint with a 26–13 win over Martin Luther College on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Scots' defense had three fumble recoveries and three interceptions, while the offense did not turn the ball over once. Macalester has picked off 18 passes in five games and enjoys a plus-14 turnover advantage on the season.
The Scots got on the board first a few minutes into the first quarter on a 4-yard run from fullback David Krueger '04. The scoring drive began on the Martin Luther 20-yard line after defensive back Marshall Mullenbach '03 recovered a Martin Luther fumble. The Scots' defense held on the ensuing Martin Luther drive, with defensive lineman Andrew Porter '03 recording his first sack of the game, dropping Rathje for a 8-yard loss.
The offense got the ball back near midfield and began their second scoring drive in as many possessions. The drive consisted of a few short runs from backs Matt Munson '04 and Krueger and was highlighted by a 23-yard pass from quarterback Adam Denny '04 to tight end Adam Heathcote '04. Denny capped off the drive by hitting tight end Nick Kraemer '03 in the endzone from 11 yards out. With only eight minutes expired on the contest, the Scots found themselves up by two scores, 14–0.
Martin Luther was quick to answer, however, taking the ball 58 yards in the opposite direction for a touchdown score of their own. After a few short passes and rushes, Martin Luther surprised the Scots' defense with a 35-yard pass from Rathje to receiver Schupmann to the southeast corner of the endzone. With five minutes left to go in the first quarter of play, the score stood at 14–7 in favor of the Scots.
First quarter scoring continued on the next series as Denny hit Krueger for 14 yards and receiver Jared Hillman '06 for 44 yards on consecutive plays to bring the Scots within one yard of the goal line. After losing two yards on his first rush, Munson made it into the endzone from three yards out to give the Scots their third touchdown of the game. First-year kicker Andrew Connet's point after was blocked and the score stood at 20–7.
The Scots tacked on three more points late in the first half on a 26-yard Connet field goal while Martin Luther registered their second and last score of the game on a 9-play, 37-yard drive capped off by a 10 yard touchdown run from Rathje.
The two-point conversion attempt failed and first half expired with a score of 23–13 in favor the Scots.
Neither team found the endzone in the third quarter, despite two fumble recoveries by linebacker Clark Boyesen '03 and one interception from safety Grey Herzberg '04.
The Scots began the final quarter of play with another scoring drive after a recovered fumble on the Martin Luther 45-yard line. Though they were unable to find the endzone, the Scots upped their lead by three on a 32-yard Connet field goal to make the final score 26–13.
Denny completed 20 of 34 passes for 267 yards with one touchdown pass. His favorite target in the contest was receiver Adam Johnson '03 who pulled in 10 passes for 141 yards. Kruger had six receptions for 41 yards while Hillman had two catches for 51 yards. Heathcote and Kraemer each had one reception for 23 and 11 yards respectively.
The defense also turned in a strong performance. Porter lead the pass rushing attack and registered three and a half quarterback sacks. Defensive linemen Ty Wetzel '06 and Jake Riley '06 each had a sack. Herzberg added his fourth pick of the year while Mullenbch pulled in his seventh, which leads Division III for number of picks this season.
The Scots earned a 372-174 advantage in total yardage and had possession of the ball for 38:47 of the contest.
Macalester plays its first road game of the season Saturday afternoon, Oct. 12, when it takes on long-time rival Hamline. The Scots are out for their fifth straight victory. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.
