The Macalester Scots and the Hamline Pipers met for the 103rd time this Saturday, Oct. 12. The Pipers were able to retain the Paint Bucket, the trophy that the two teams have battled over for decades, as the Scots fell 29–13.

Amidst strong winds and in front of a large Hamline homecoming crowd, the Scots struggled on offense, turning the ball over five times. After being among the nations' leaders in turnover ratio over the past few weeks, the Scots' defense did not take the ball away from the Pipers once.

With the wind at their backs, the Pipers jumped out to a quick first quarter lead. Their first score came nine minutes into the contest on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Nate Dammann to receiver Dan Ryks to cap off a 7-play, 81-yard drive. The kick after was good and the Pipers were on the board first, 7–0.

Three minutes later, Ryan Laube kicked a 26-yard field goal to put his team up by 10 points early on. With only a few seconds left in the first quarter, running back Andy Gross punched the ball into the endzone from two yards out. Dammann found the endzone on the two-point conversion and as the first quarter of play expired, the Scots found themselves in an 18 point deficit.

The teams switched sides and the Scots were able to go on offense with the wind at their backs. Five minutes into the second quarter, quarterback Adam Denny '04 found receiver Jared Hillman '06 in the northeast corner of the endzone from 24 yards out. The kick after was good and the score stood at 18–7. Two series later, the Scots put another six points on the board on a 26-yard pass from Denny to back David Krueger '04. The two-point conversion attempt failed, and the Scots were down by five, 18–13 as the first half of play came to an end.

Having proven themselves a team with the ability to come from behind and win a game, the Scots made their way onto the field for the second half confident that they could stay in and win the game. However, they had to go against the wind for 15 more minutes of play, a task that would prove arduous. With just over two minutes expired in the second half, the Pipers increased their lead by eight points as Dammann hit Adam Friedman from 37 yards out and then converted on another two-point conversion. The Scots struggled to put together a drive for the entirety of the second half and the defense was not able to get much-needed turnovers to give the offense a boost. The only other score of the game came at the end of the third quarter for the Pipers on a 23-yard field goal attempt. The final score of the 103rd meeting was 29–13 as the Pipers retained the Paint Bucket.

Denny finished the game with 16 completions in 41 tries, 162 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Adam Johnson '03 had six catches for 56 yards while Krueger had three grabs for 36 yards and Hillman had two for 37 yards. Running back Matt Munson '04 had 64 yards on 14 carries as well as three receptions for 18 yards.

Defensive lineman Andrew Porter had one of the best games on his career, registering 13 tackles, six of them solo stops, four quarterback sacks and four other tackles for loss of yardage. The D3football.com All-American increased his career totals at Macalester to 36 quarterback sacks and 65 tackles for loss of yardage. Porter was named Macalester Athlete of the Week as a result of his performance.

The Scots' record now stands at 4–2 on the season. They travel to Portland, Ore. this Saturday, Oct. 19 to take on Lewis and Clark. Kick-off is at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
