Quietly and mostly to myself
Ramsey Junior High School trumps Macalester in student diversity

By ERIK MORALES

“There is no reason why more minority students from this area [Twin Cities] shouldn’t be coming to Macalester.”

-Terry Addison, Black coordinator of the Black component of the minority and special service program, Nov. 13, 1981, The Mac Weekly.

“Right now, I just don’t see what would attract Black students to come here… Not many Blacks want to come to a college which has almost no Black faculty, almost no Black staff and such a small number of Black students.”

-Dee Anne Davis, sophomore, Feb. 5, 1982, The Mac Weekly.

Behold the ivory tower of education. The night watchmen of special section SAT, and their specialized reserves ACT, patrol attentively with their calculators. Those who do not fall within the margins are told that the tower does not exist and that they should be on their 9-to-5 way.

Looks like the Ramsey kids have more than just a nicotine addiction. Wow, they have a greater percentage of minority students than Macalester. All those times that I walked past and wondered if—so to speak—the grass really is greener on their side. Granted, their total number is smaller than ours—which yields a higher percentage—but examine the total minority amounts. Ramsey’s total number of minority students is 480 while Macalester’s is 225. Their number is more than double ours! A middle school across the street from campus has more than double the amount of minorities! Maybe I can take a class there…
