November 6, 1941—The Macalester cross-country team ended its season with an exciting victory. “The Macalester cross country team won the state championship for the second year by splashing five men into the first six to finish the 2.3 miles of snow and slush covered course at the University last Saturday morning.”

November 11, 1960—Macalester students showed their strong support for the Republican Party in the 1960 presidential election. “Richard Nixon would have been elected as president by a landslide in Tuesday’s national election if Macalester students had been given an opportunity to be the sole electors. However, the desires of Mac students did not correspond with the general flow of public opinion, for Jack Kennedy was elected as president…Mac showed its strong Republican spirit by casting 626 votes for the Nixon-Lodge team, while Kennedy-Johnson received 218 votes.”

November 3, 1967—Macalester students were arrested while showing their disapproval for the Vietnam War. “Last Saturday three Macalester students were arrested at Applebaum’s supermarket and charged with violating St. Paul trespass ordinance. [The students] were passing out leaflets asking for a boycott against Dow Chemical…one of the major producers of napalm…The protesters spent about six hours in jail awaiting bail of $200 each, later lowered to $50 each, The money was raised by friends on campus.”
