The Macalester football season ended last Saturday with a 45-13 loss to Carleton, giving the team a final record of 1-8. Quarterback Adam Denny ’04 led the team, going 18-for-34 for 144 yards, completing six passes each to Jared Hillman ’06 and Adam Heathcote ’04. Macalester’s defensive leaders, Tim Burns ’06, Heathcote and Jakub Koziol ’07, each had nine tackles.

The Scots averaged 14.1 points per game this season, compared with an average of 41 points scored against them. They also rushed poorly, managing 861 total yards compared with 2,742 for their opponents. In contrast, Macalester had a higher passing average than their opponents, totaling 2,049 yards versus their opponents’ 1,538.

The Scots will be losing seven players this year, including Heathcote, David Kruger ’04, Matt Munson ’04 Kevin Whinnery ’04, Justin Hagen ’04, Jesse Batty ’04 and Rick Lechowick ’04. Although Denny is a senior, he will compete again next year because he has one more semester of eligibility. As there are no juniors on the team, Denny will probably be the only senior on the team next year.

The football team is optimistic about its future. “Our biggest problem is that we have lots of talented guys, but a very small team,” Ben Hamborg ’07 said. “So this season, we’d stay close to the other team in the first half, but we’d get worn out because most of these teams are twice our size. The year after next we’ll be pretty good. We’ll get rid of the empty class [of ’05], so we’ll have four years worth of players.”

Coach Dennis Czech also expressed this sentiment earlier this season when he said that the team was focusing on a quality over quantity philosophy. While the team’s quality was not enough to carry them this season, a future with both characteristics could give the Scots a winning season two years down the line.
