Three light bollards were knocked over near Kirk Hall last weekend. Damaging these lights has been a trend recently, affecting lights in various places on campus.

“It was about six on Saturday morning, and I was lying in bed, when I heard a sound, like someone banging a pipe with a wrench,” Kirk resident Sebastian Lecourt ‘03 said. “I got up and looked outside. Of the four lights I can see from my window, three were knocked over. One was still up, but my friend was trying to knock it over. He was doing sort of a running jump kick.

“So I yelled, ‘Hey you drunken bastard, what are you doing?’ He said, ‘I’m trying to knock the light out.’ I didn’t hear any more noise after that, so he must have given up.”

Head of Security Terry Gorman said that while the damage to light bollards has happened around campus, the most frequent damage has occurred on lights on the west side of Bigelow, those between Old Main and Carnegie and near Kirk Hall.

“The light post west of Bigelow is one we’ve fixed at least a couple of times in the past couple of weeks” Gorman said.

Gorman stressed that the lights were costly, and that the school could be spending its money more productively.

“It can be several hundred dollars to $500 per light,” Gorman said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it were up in the tens of thousands of dollars per year. It’s just foolishness. It’s taking money away from other things we could be doing on campus. We don’t need this continued expense.”
