Straight Up and Student Produced:

By JESSICA E. BROWN
Contributing Writer

Food, Irish dancing, legs, deconstruction and sass—what more could a person ask for? The week after Thanksgiving break, the long-awaited fall dance concert, Straight Up, will take place. Ten Macalester students will present their own choreography in 11 dances. This show is very different from others because it is an entirely student-produced performance, so come support your fellow students!

The student choreographers, with the support of stage manager Kate Koch ’06 and lighting designer Chris Morris ’05, designed the music, lighting and costumes and their endeavors present an eclectic display of the high quality of dance at Macalester.

Nicole Forbes ’04, Sarah Russ ’06 and Lauren Costley ’04 each perform diverse solo works. Alaina Kelley ’05 and the Scoil Rince Macalester dancers bring down the house with a high-energy Irish dance that would make Michael Flatley proud (if that were a good thing).

The large group piece by Theresa Madaus ’05 combines umbrellas and ballroom dancing.

Were you accosted at Macalester by someone asking you your feelings about imperialism? Well, that dance will be performed with muscles to back up the theories. Zack Kline ’02, violinist extraordinaire, performs with Bohdran drummer Christina Danico ’05 in my own piece.

Monica Thomas ’05 presents an intriguing work, developing the dance language using the weight and manipulation of the human body.

Senior Emily Potter’s dance is an incredibly innovative interpretation of your grandma’s cookbook recipes. Accompanying the dancers are Lindsay Goss ’04, cooking up cinnamon and spice, and cellists Brooke Childs ’04 and Heidi Zimmerman ’04.

Cara De Lavallade ’05 presents a work mixing Metallica and femininity, while a remixed Dinah Washington is the music for senior Nell Saunders’ hot dance full of sass and booty.

Come support the incredible choreographic and dancing talent of Macalester students! It will be a kick-ass, surprising evening—we promise.
