In addition to instructing language labs, Paulino Ayala-Brener, one of the native Spanish speakers from Argentina, was looking for a means of bringing Spanish culture to Macalester in other interesting ways. With this in mind, he combined his culture with his love of theater by heading Macalester’s very own Spanish Theater Workshop, which provides creative opportunities for students with an interest in theater and the Spanish language.

According to Ayala-Brener, the goal of the workshop is two-fold: as well as giving students a chance to participate as actors and playwrights, it allows them to use and practice Spanish in a new context, beyond the realm of academic learning. Students collaborated in writing the play and casting the roles. Ayala-Brener emphasizes that the workshop is highly “process-oriented” in that the final product is not necessarily the sole focus of the activity.

The workshop’s upcoming theatrical performance features six actors: Julia Miller ’05, Lydia Brawner ’02, Adria Fernandez ’03, Jimica Dawkins ’03, Sarah Turner ’05, and native speaker Alicia Casatti from Paraguay. The actors have been meeting weekly since early Oct., getting to know each other and starting out with technical and improv exercises in preparation for the writing of the play, which was entirely collaborative.

The play is entitled “M.A.,” and its meaning is intended to remain mysterious until you actually see it. The play is approximately 30 minutes, somewhat interactive, and is sure to make audiences laugh. The actors are enthusiastic and are involved to have fun while getting a different kind of exposure to linguistics. The show promises to be a great cultural and international event and the product of real enthusiasm and dedication.

Depending on how well this performance goes over, Ayala-Brener is considering the possibility of doing a similar workshop next semester.

Performances are: Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Atrium of the Campus Center, 30 spaces available; Saturday, Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel Lounge, 30 spaces; and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Spanish House, 182 Vernon St, 20 spaces.
