The Macalester women’s swimming and diving team continued to show that they are among the top teams in the MIAC Saturday, Nov. 23 at Leonard Natatorium, when they beat St. Thomas, 131–95. The women earned first-place finishes in 10 out of the 13 events to top the Tommies, improving to a perfect 4–0 on the dual meet season and 3-0 in MIAC duals.
Julie Rokosky ’03 Heather Lendway ’06, Natalie Ross ’05 and Liz Fitzgerald ’05 won a pair of events each to lead the way for the women. The Scots also gained a first-place finish from Johanna Moore ’03 in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 29.44.
Rokosky won the 800-meter freestyle in 10:35.92 and came out first in the 400 free style with a time of 5:08.42. Lendway won her races, the 200 free with a time of 2:16.71 and 100 free with a time of 1:03.17. Ross came out on top in the 200 individual medley in 2:37.18 and in the 200 butterfly in 2:48.28. Fitzgerald won 1-meter diving, finishing with 210.00 points and 3-meter diving , finishing with 207.50 points.
The women’s success continued when they set the school record in the 400-meter medley relay in 4:51.29. The team was comprised of Heather Lendway, Lisa Lendway ’03, Moore and Ross.
Moore attributes the team’s success thus far this season to the consistent level of support present amongst her teammates.”We have a really good team this year because we all get along well,” Moore said. “We’re all comfortable with one another and we’re all supportive of one another. We’re undeafeated, but that’s second to how well we get along as a team,” Moore continued.
Moore also spoke of the team’s slightly different training program this season, which she feels has helped the swimmers greatly. “We’re doing things a little bit differently this year. We have a new dry land program and a lot of the sprinters have been lifting weights,” Moore said.
The men’s team also competed well, but unfortunately the Tommies came out on top, 128–82. The Scots picked up five first place finishes, with two from Joe Hanes ’03 in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.96 and in the 400 free style with a time of 4:24.56. Erik Nelson ’03 took first place in the 50 meter free style with a time of 25.00 while the divers came through with two first place finishes: Bo Rydze ’05 won the 1-meter board with 160.30 points and Zephy McKanna ’03 won the 3-meter board with 154.00 points.
The Scots travel to Appleton, WI this weekend, Dec. 6-7, to take part in the Lawrence University Invitational.
