Reformed MCSG loosens purse strings, makes plans

After a campus-wide referendum reformed the structure of its Legislative Body last fall, the Macalester College Student Government is beginning the semester poised to address a number of issues facing students. This semester, using surplus finds from pervious years, MCSG will bring actor Edward James Olmos and NAACP Chairman Julian Bond to campus, work to secure funding to bring laptop computers to the Campus Center, hold a formal banquet for all students, faculty and staff, relate student concerns to trustees and address the issue of race at the college, among other things...

Graduation rate rises at Macalester

Macalester's five-year graduation rate, the number of students who enter Macalester and graduate in at least five years, has increased by nearly two percentage points in the past year, according to the Institutional Research Office...

Stitchin' Bitches sock it to the winter blues

The harsh cold of this year's winter has driven many students to stores to buy gloves, scarves and hats to shield them from the frigid Minnesota wind. Others, however, have no need for Target when it comes to procuring woolen accessories. They are Macalester's very own knitting club, chartered under the name "The Stitchin' Bitches." Founded at the beginning of last semester, the group took its name from a previous organization rumored to have existed at Macalester at some point in the past, according to head knitter Anna Funderburgh '03. They have also considered renaming themselves "The Knittin' Ninjas."...

Support of vandalism is equivalent to 'advocating anarchy'

So The Mac Weekly won't mind its offices being "egged," toilet-papered, and spray-painted by folks who disapprove of its editorial policy? If you condone vandalism, you must be ready and willing to receive it. You are advocating anarchy.

We would like to thank you for the views you expressed in your editorial on the creative liberation of the McDonalds billboard that had been looming over our campus for weeks. The billboard liberation was a highly provocative act of resistance against the company that was targeted. The editorial did a good job of placing the billboard action in the context of the Macalester community...
