Macalester mourns

The flag flew at half mast this week as Macalester mourned the loss of senior Paul Pellowski. Paul was struck by a car and killed while crossing Snelling Avenue early Saturday morning. His death, the first of a Macalester student in three years, has left the campus deeply saddened. The accident happened shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, when Paul was leaving a Macalester party with a group of friends. He was hit near the intersection of Snelling and Portland. The driver of the car had not been speeding and had not been drinking alcohol before the crash according to police. Paul was a Psychology major from Northfield, Minnesota. His wake and funeral were attended by a large number of Macalester students, faculty, staff and community members. Friends who spoke at the wake recalled Paul's kindness, warmth and sense of humor. Paul's wake and funeral were both held in Northfield. The wake was held Tuesday evening at the Bierman Funeral Home and the funeral took place Wednesday at St. Dominic's Catholic Church. A memorial service was held in Macalester's Weyerhaeuser Chapel yesterday at noon. Counselors at Winton are available for any students needing assistance.

Author Jane Smiley to speak at Mac

Jane Smiley will read from her novel Horse Haven, at Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel. Smiley's writing has been praised by book critics across the country. According to Bill Barich of the New York Times, "There's a benign deity at the helm in Smiley's world. Her final chapters have a wonderful restorative quality, filled with grace notes and epiphanies that offer a fitting close to this smart, warmhearted, winning book." Horse Haven is Smiley's latest work.

By Ryan Kampe

I guess you could call me converted. I went to see Rent with the feeling that most people went to The Phantom Menace with. So many people had told me how good it was, (or in The Phantom Menace's case, how good it was supposed to be) that I was pretty sure that I would walk away a little unfulfilled. However, I was pleasantly surprised....
