Seven professors granted tenure

The Board of Trustees approved seven Macalester professors for tenure at their most recent meeting. All seven had previously been recommended by the Curriculum Committee but had to wait for formal approval by the Trustees. The new tenured faculty are:

•Rebecca Hoye (Chemistry)
•Sonita Sarker (Women's and Gender Studies and English)
•Tom Halverson (Mathematics & Computer Science)
•Arju Guneratne (Anthropology)
•Karine Moe (Economics)
•David Moore (International Studies & English)
•Sarah Dart (Linguistics).


Harmony O'Rourke '01 student commencement speaker

O'Rourke, a history major from Fergus Falls, Minn. Will speak alongside three honorary degree recipients: human rights activist Stephanie Farrior '74, torture victims center director Douglas Johnson '75 and Federal Judge Michael J. Davis '69 Macalester's 112th Commencement ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 20, on the lawn outside Old Main.

Hamlet: Good acting, beautiful production overshadow missing words

Reams of red satin. Traces of dragging robes left on a stage of sand. Pools of water making dresses wet, reflecting, splashing. These are the memorable moments of the Theater de la Jeune Lune's Hamlet. The artistry was captivating. The production was a beautiful painting, transforming itself with the movements of the actors. Therein lies the picturesque play's fatal flaw: it was too beautiful....
