Study Abroad

Majors and minors in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department participate in many forms of scholarly and extracurricular activities -- they are featured in the WGSS monthly forum, they attend conferences locally and nationally, and tour with dance and music ensembles nationally and internationally. They are very active in study-abroad programs, from Ecuador to Senegal, Prague to Dublin.

WGSS Mac students have attended or are currently attending:

Dickinson College's Study Abroad Program in Yaoundé, Cameroon
Natasha Suelflow '05 - I'm a junior WGS Major and am going to participate in Dickinson College's study abroad program in Yaoundé, Cameroon. I leave on the 7th of January to spend four months with a family, taking independent studies at the University of Yaoundé, and hopefully doing an internship with the Cameroon Women Lawyers Association. It should be really great; I'm excited and nervous at this point in time. We have a couple weeks of travel around the country before classes start and then plenty of opportunities to travel by ourselves once our academics start.
I wanted to do this program because it gives me the chance to learn about women and development in a context completely different from that which I am accustomed. I'll be studying subjects like Women and Politics and Women in Traditional Societies with professors at the university. What I learn in my tutorials will hopefully transfer to my experiences in my internship. No doubt, this will be an indisputable resource for the rest of my WGS career when I return to Mac. I will also get a chance to work on my French and lay on the beach!

SIT Cuba Program
Tyler Woods '04 - completed his study abroad in Fall 2002. He says the F.L.A.S.C.O. seminar focuses on women's organizations in Cuba and looks largely at Marxist feminism as an overall contribution to contemporary Cuban identities.

SIT Vietnam Program
Megan Stevenson '04 - completed her study abroad program in Fall 2002.

University of Cape Town
Delaney Keyes '04 - spent the spring 2003 in Cuernavaca, Mexico with two weeks in Central America. The experience affected her strongly by increasing her interest in language, immigration rights, and “free trade” policies especially as they affect women and marginalized peoples.

Goldsmiths College in London
Megan Elliot direct enrolled and took classes in cultural studies.

SIT South Africa program
Grant Loehnig studied in Cape Town during the Fall 2000. His independent project focused on gay male identity in a cape flats community of color.

Antioch College's Buddhist Studies in India-Fall Program
Nicole Allegra-Miceli participated in this program during the Fall 2000. This is an intensive Buddhist meditation program conducted in a Burmese monastery in Bodh Gaya, India. Depending on the Contemporary Buddhist Culture professor, this class may spend a significant time on women's location in various Buddhist cultures. Nicole's independent project focused on the impact of the Tibetan goddess Tara on lay Tibetan women in Kathmandu and Pokhara, Nepal.
