Recreational Activities for Faculty and Staff

Nutrition

It's called: A Calorie Counter. You can see it at: aCalorieCounter A Calorie Counter is a completely free and non-commercial web site that has taken the USDA National Nutrient Database and made it available in the quickest, easiest and most usable format it has ever been in before. A search of any food instantly brings up the full nutrition facts for that food such as calories, protein, carbs, fat, sodium, cholesterol, vitamins and much more.

Kickboxing

A great cardiovascular workout with controlled jabs, kicks and boxing drills. The instructor is Jill Gilfillan.

This will be offered again in the spring.

Latin Dance Aerobics

Aerobic exercise based on the rhythms of samba, salsa, merengue, cha cha ad other Latin Dances. The instructor will be Don DeBoer.

Circuit Training Class

This class incorporates a fast tempo with resistance training to provide a total body strength workout that elevates the heart rate and helps burn a few extra calories. A combination of weight machines, medicine balls, dumbbells, and cardio equipment will be used. Steve Murray is the instructor for this class that meets twice weekly for six weeks.
It will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12:05 - 12:50 pm in the Deno Fitness Center. The dates are Nov. 10 - Dec. 15. The cost for faculty/staff is $35, students $25 for 11 classes.

Class size limited due to space.

Sign-ups begin November 2.

Pilates

This class meets for six Mondays beginning Nov. 9 from 12:05 -12:50 pm in Studio 1, Leonard Center. The instructor is Kristine Spangard. Fee for students is $15, faculty/staff fee is $20. Wear comfortable (not baggy) clothing and bring a mat if you have one.

We need at least 8 participants to hold this class.

Yoga
Interested in finding out why so many people like yoga? Now is your chance to find out with the WHAM yoga classes. These classes are an excellent opportunity for everyone and are a bargain compared to off campus yoga classes.

Yoga builds strength and flexibility, helps relieve tension and stress and helps you relax and learn to focus. Joy Laine, Macalester faculty member and certified Iyengar Yoga instructor, will teach the late afternoon class.

The late afternoon session of yoga starts Monday, Nov. 9, Kagin Ballroom, from 4:45-6 p.m. The cost is $15 for students, $20 for faculty/staff. Wear comfortable clothing that you can stretch in and bring a yoga mat if you have one.

A second yoga class is being offered this session. It will be held on Thursdays, 12:05 - 12:50 pm. The instructor is Anna Roth and it will start Nov. 12.

Class is derived from intersection of psychology, yoga, traditional Tibetan medicine, and Ayurveda knowledge bases.

Yoga mats are provided but please bring your own yoga mat if you have one to the Monday class. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing that you can stretch in.

Water Aerobics

Water Aerobics will be offered at 11:30 am - 12:15 pm, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, in the Riley Pool at the Leonard Center. Participants do not need to know how to swim and you won't get your hair wet! Join the fun! Questions? Contact Kay Crawford or e-mail crawford@macalester.edu
