Macalester Sociology Graduate Wins Top Prize in National Paper Competition, Receives Honorable Mention in Another July 2, 2009 -Sociology graduate Shantee Rosado ‘09 was awarded best undergraduate paper by the Society for the Study of Social Problems Global Problems Division and was also awarded honorable mention in the American Sociological Association’s Sociology of Law Section undergraduate paper competition for her paper “El Que no Tiene Dinga, Tiene Mandinga: Black Collective Identity Formation among Afro-descendants in Dominican Republic and Ecuador.” Rosado will receive these awards at the annual meetings for the SSSP and ASA, both of which are scheduled for August in San Francisco. more»

President Barack Obama has announced his intent to nominate Anne E. Derse '77 as Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania June 5, 2009 -Anne Elizabeth Derse is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor. She joined the Department of State in 1981 after receiving an M.A. in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a B.A. in French and Linguistics from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1976. more»

Macalester Sociology Students Awarded Top Two Prizes in National Competition June 1, 2009 - Macalester sociology majors Alex Park ‘09 (Oakland, Calif.) and Jennifer Barnes ‘09 (North Oaks, Minn.), were awarded first and second prizes respectively for their articles published in Sociological Insight, a refereed journal focused on undergraduate sociology research. Macalester was the only school in the country to have two students’ articles selected for publication. more»

Macalester College Student Receives Prestigious National Fellowship Award Supports Young Leaders Exploring Ministry May 28, 2009 - Kristin E. Riegel ‘10, a Humanities and Media and Cultural Studies major, has been selected to receive a 2009 Fund for Theological Education (FTE) Undergraduate Fellowship. FTE Undergraduate Fellowships recognize students who have gifts for leadership and are exploring the possibility of ministry as a vocation. As an FTE Undergraduate Fellow, Riegel will receive $2,000 for tuition, other educational expenses or a self-designed experience related to the exploration of ministry. She will also attend the 2009 FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry, “Becoming Rich toward God: Pastoral Leadership and Economic Justice,” June 17-21, 2009, at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va. more»

Macalester Political Science Graduate Wins Top Prize From Law and Society Association Unprecedented Third Year in a Row for Macalester Students May 27, 2009 - Clare Ryan ’08 has won the 2009 Undergraduate Paper Prize from The Law and Society Association for her political science honors thesis titled, “Confronting Childhood: Courts and the Contradictions of Juvenile Justice.”  This marks the third year in a row that a Macalester student has won this recognition from The Law and Society Association (LSA).  Macalester is the only school in the nation to have undergraduates win the prize for three consecutive years.     more»
