Every other January the Classics Department leads an international study abroad opportunity for Macalester students. The Macalester group is led by classics faculty members Andy Overman and Nanette Goldman.

Visiting instructor Nanette Goldman specializes in Latin poetry and documentary and literary texts from the Greco-Roman Near East. Her current research focuses on Jewish poetry of crisis in the Second Temple period. Instructor Goldman coordinates the Hebrew language program.

Professor Overman specializes in religion, culture, and ethnicity in the Greco-Roman world. He has written widely on the development of Christianity and Judaism in the Roman world, the interaction between cultures and races in the Roman Empire, diaspora Judaism, and archaeology of the Roman world. Professor Overman is an archaeologist who is currently the director of the Omrit dig in Israel. Each summer students accompany him to this site in the Middle East to conduct excavations of a Roman temple.

This January the Macalester Classics Department is studying in Turkey with 30 students and four faculty from January 5 to January 20. The group is currently in Istanbul studying Byzantine and Ottoman history. The Macalester group is leaving this week to study the ancient sites of Troy, Ephesus, Pergamum, Sardis, Miletus and a number of other sites along the southwest Aegean coast.
