4th Annual Diversity Weekend at Macalester College
"Axis of Evil: Hate Crimes at Home"
Who: Keynote speaker King Downing, attorney and coordinator
of the American Civil Liberties Union's nationwide Campaign Against
Racial Profiling, will talk about "Axis of Evil: 9/11 and
Hate Crimes at Home."
Panel discussion topic: "Exploring the Impact of
Hate Crimes Across Communities: How Do We Deal?" with Pete
Cahill, chief deputy, criminal division of the Hennepin County
Attorney's Office; Joan Humes, assistant U.S. Attorney and chief,
civil division, U.S. Attorney's Office; Doug Faderhart, director
of programs and community outreach, Outfront Minnesota; Ilean
Her, executive director, Council on Asian Pacific Islanders; Manpreet
Dhanjal, staff attorney in refugee and immigrant program, Minnesota
Advocates for Human Rights; Amalia Anderson, Indigenous People's
Human Rights Project; King Downing, American Civil Liberties Union
and Myra Garnes, assistant dean of students, Macalester College;
and Quetzal Coatlicue Danza Mexica Azteca, dance group displaying
the history of the Indigenous People known as the Chichimeca (or
Aztec)
What: Fourth Annual Diversity Weekend at Macalester College.
Organized by a coalition of student organizations, including:
Adelante!, Afrika!, Amnesty International, Asian Student Alliance
(ASA), Black Liberation Affairs Committee (BLAC), Bridges, Proud
Indigenous People For Education (PIPE), Program Board and Student
Government, who hope to raise awareness of hate crimes and motivate
students to fight them.
